Description

Santa Maria is a large active volcano in the western highlands of Guatemala, in Xela. The volcano is part of the Sierra Madre chain, which extends along the western edge of Guatemala between the pacific ocean and the highlands. The volcanoes are formed by the subduction of the Cocos Plate under the Caribbean Plate, which has led to the formation of the Central American Volcanic Arc.

Hiking to the top you will be met with outstanding views of the Volcanic arc. Sleeping overnight at base camp and observing the sunset and sunrise is truly a unique and unforgettable exprience. The highest summit is 3,772m above sea level. The tour will start from Xela, where your guide will pick you up.

Day 1

  • 7:30am Pick-up from Xela to the Llanos del Pinal.
  • 8:00am Arrive in Llanos del Pinal.
  • 8:30am Begin ascent, approximately a 5 hour hike.
  • 3:00pm Arrive at base camp to enjoy the beautiful views and later observe the sunset.

Day 2 

  • 5:00am Wake-up to hike to the summit for sunrise. 
  • 6:30am Return to base camp for breakfast.
  • 8:00am Begin descent back to Llanos del Pinal.
  • 11:30am Arrive back to the village for transfer to your hotel.
  • 12:00pm Arrive back to Xela.
